Gary Anderson is a Professor Emeritus of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. His research interests are interdisciplinary and range widely. As a result of this interest, he has co-authored two books on Action Research (Anderson, Herr, and Nihlen, 1994; Herr and Anderson, 2015), and has written extensively on issues of knowledge production in applied fields of study. He has published most extensively in the field of Educational Leadership. His work attempts to refocus the field through the use of critical and poststructural theories, particularly Marx, Habermas, Bourdieu, and Foucault. He has also done research on organizational micropolitics, and more recently on school privatization and the impact of global neoliberalism on education. He has an interest in Education in Latin America and has received two Fulbright awards to do research in Argentina and Mexico.
Kathryn Herr is a Professor in Educational Foundations at Montclair State University, United States. She is interested in qualitative and action research methods. Most recently she completed a study on the first public middle school to move to single-sex academies/classes on a school-wide basis. Beyond this, I am interested in issues of youth, youth violence and the fit/lack of fit between diverse youth and institutions of education. She co-authored an action research book with Professor Gary Anderson titled the ‘Action Research Dissertation: A Guide for Students and Faculty’ published by Sage. This practical book demonstrates how action research dissertations are different from more traditional dissertations and prepares students and their committees for the unique dilemmas they may face, such as validity, positionality, design, write-up, ethics, and dissertation defense.
